Steve McQueen ist der berühmteste, die Hells Angels sind die berüchtigsten „Outsider“. Die Londoner Ausstellung „Live for Myself. Answer to Nobody“ zeigt eine Vielzahl von Künstlern der Gegenwart, die sich auf verschiedenste Weise mit dem Thema des Außenseiter- und Rebellentums auseinandersetzen. Motorräder sind immer dabei.
Die Verwandlung des US-Schauspielers Steve McQueen in die Motorcycle-Lifestyle-Ikone innerhalb der vergangenen fünf Jahre ist schon erstaunlich. Mit McQueen, der zu Lebzeiten tatsächlich ein hervorragender und leidenschaftlicher Fahrer war und sich nie zuviel um die Meinung anderer scherte, hat die wieder wachsende Schar der Motorradbegeisterten eine absolut glaubwürdige Projektionsfläche erhalten, auf die sich scheinbar fast alle einigen können.
Steve McQueen soll hier aber nur der Aufhänger sein für eine ganze Reihe von Arbeiten. Die Londoner Ausstellung Live For Myself. Answer To Nobody ist gerade aufgrund ihres breiten Ansatzes interessant. Dafür steht unter anderem auch der Co-Veranstalter „The Vinyl Factory“, eine Gruppe, die Kunst und Musik zusammenbringen will und dem jeweiligen Thema entsprechende, limitierte Platten-Editionen produziert. Klingt spannend.

Live For Myself. Answer To Nobody
Mach Schau in collaboration with The Vinyl Factory is proud to present an exhibition of never before seen photographs of the legendary Steve McQueen. ‚Live for Myself. Answer to Nobody.‘ showcases Barry Feinstein’s images alongside contemporary artists’ own work, contextualizing the collaboration, dealing with the overarching theme of the ‚Outsider‘ and rebel culture still present in today. These new works relating to the myth and legend of this icon have been commissioned with artists taking up their own themes on the legend of Steve McQueen, to create their own stories and explanations of the man. McQueen had an appeal that crossed cultures and eras, ‘noble’ and ‘rebellious’, seemingly conflicting attributes in one person. In addition to this original collection is an exploration of the legacy of biker culture in contemporary society where the same rebel spirit lives on.
The show at The Custom Factory Project Space will take place on the 3rd Floor NCP, 32 Brewer Street, Soho, London, W1F 0ST. Show runs 28th November till 14th Jan 2014. Wed-Sun 12pm-6pm.
